We are living in a complex social time and we are now understanding what this means for us as a species. The tools of social media allow for a space where carefully crafted profiles, pictures and comments can help us create a platform that we are happy with but that may not necessarily be altogether accurate. I love watching a video that makes me reassess something that I do every day and my interaction with social media definitely fits within that criteria.

I had an interesting interaction with a friend where they said to me “it looks like you and your partner having a fantastic time” to which I replied, “looks can be deceiving as we have just broken up”. All I could think after this comment was that if this person was talking to me over the phone (or better in person) they would be able to hear in my voice that things were not okay. Instead, they saw my carefully crafted happy moments while on the road with my partner and were able to misinterpret the scenario.

I remember a time before I had a laptop and smartphone with a great fondness nowadays. I remember spending lots of time painting and playing music and now I don't go anywhere without a screen in my vicinity and to be honest, it is getting in the way. It doesn't really help that a large majority of my work is done on the computer either as it gives me less reason to leave it.

Our social networks are changing what we're doing, who we are and how we operate. Videos like the one below help us assess where we are at so we can be at least a little more aware of where we currently stand.
